本年度は、前年度に収集を行った、上演に関する記録や、芝居や劇作家に対する評価をはじめとする歴史資料を基に、王政復古以降の劇場が置かれた社会的、政治的状況の再構築を試みた。とりわけ、政情に翻弄され、様々な変遷に晒された十七世紀の英国演劇の伝統が、いかに受容されたかを探ることで、英国初の職業的女性劇作家(Aphra Behn)を誕生させた契機、またBehnの死後、女性作家ブームとでもいうべき、芝居や散文によって生計を立てる女性たちが一気に出現することとなった状況などに対して考察を行った。具体的には、歴史資料に照らしながら、Behnによる翻案の際の作家としての戦略を分析した。そこで、翻案劇を創作する際の原作となった劇場封鎖以前や内乱期のThomas Middleton, John Tatham, Thomas Killigrewといった作家たちの作品と比較することで、それまでの男性の手による英国演劇がどのように用いられたのかを検証した。さらに、Behnの活躍を経た後の1695-96年の上演シーズンに、4人の女性が商業演劇界に登場するといった現象に注目し、その後、十八世紀に活躍したSusanna Centlivre, Hannah Cowley, Elizabeth Inchbaldへとつながる「女性作家」の流れを再考し、後続の女性作家たちの中にBehnとそのジェンダー・ポリティクスがどのように受容されていったのかを見出すことで、英国初の職業的女性劇作家と見なされるAphra Behnの存在意義を明らかにした。

This year's collection, performance, review, and reconstruction of the social and political situation The British drama system of the 17th century was explored in the light of political circumstances. The birth of the first professional female playwright in Britain (Aphra Behn) was an opportunity for women writers to make a living after Behn died. The specific historical data of the case were analyzed briefly. The original works of Thomas Middleton, John Tatham, Thomas Killigrew and the works of the writers of the period before the theater blockade were compared.
