项目摘要

New York Public Libraryにてハーマン・メルヴィルおよびその親族を含めた書簡類を閲覧し、メルヴィルの一族にたいする自尊心と、没落した自身の家族にかんする劣等意識が微妙に絡み合うさまを見ることができた。この成果は、論文「楽園のあちら側」にて一部発表し、また近刊の共著書『共和国の振り子』にて、さらに詳細に論じている。また樋口一葉、岡本かのこを読みながら、同時に高橋和巳、島尾敏雄などの日本の男性作家と比較した上で、男女の性愛観と恋愛観、家族観にひそむ諸相を、論文「時間の光芒」および論文「最後の箱舟」でまとめあげた。現代アメリカ作家については、ジョン・アップダイクおよびカート・ヴォネガット、トマス・ピンチョンを読むことに専念した。メルヴィルと比較した上で暴力意識のアメリカにおける普遍性を抽出し、現代日本文学との比較検討を試みたが、その成果はまだまとまっていない。さらにカリブ女性作家をより幅広く読むことで、メルヴィルと植民地主義の主題と家族のそれとが絡みあうさまを追求した。この成果は論文「楽園のあちら側」と共著書『共和国の振り子』に取りこまれている。また、2003年12月発行予定のポストコロニアリズムをめぐる共著書『ポストコロニアル文学の現在』(仮題・晃洋書房)で、カリブ女性作家ジャメイカ・キンケイドをターゲットに、同様の主題を堀り下げることになっている。これら一連の研究過程で、キンケイドの小説『母の自伝』および『ミスター・ポッター』の翻訳作業も進めたが、現在のところ出版社が見つかっておらず、まだ刊行できないでいる。現代アメリカ作家とカリブ作家にかんする比較研究が、今回残された課題であるといえる。
