本研究の目的は、古英語の代表的研究者であるBruce Mitchell氏を始め、研究者の間で広く認められている節の分類法(古英語の節を主節・従属節・等位節に分類する伝統的な分類法)が妥当ではなく、古英語も現代英語と同じように主節・従属節・等位主節・等位従属節の4つの節型に分類すべきであることを示すことであった。本年度の調査では、いくつかの代表的な古英語散文作品を対象とし、等位節を中心にデータベースを作成、その分析を行った。様々な要因の影響を調査するためにデータベースの作成にあたっては、以下の点についてフィールドを設けた。(i)等位節を導く等位接続詞の種類、(ii)等位節の種類(等位主節か等位従属節か)、(iii)動詞の型(定形動詞は本動詞か助動詞か、など)、(iv)構文の型(目的語や項となる前置詞句を含むかどうか、副詞要素はあるか、など)、(v)主語と動詞の倒置の有無、(vi)文体的要員による影響(交差対句法の可能性)。調査の結果、等位主節は等位従属節とは明らかに異なるふるまいをし、したがって両者は節の分類においては明確に区別すべきであることが解明された。今回の研究結果のうち、資料をAElfric's Catholic Homiliesに限定したものを、2002年8月にスコットランドのグラスゴー大学で開催された第12回国際英語歴史言語学会(International Conference on English Historical Linguistics)において発表した。
