本年度はまず、昨年度に引き続きNimijataka第1-22詩節について考察を進めた。ここでは、出家と在家の優位をめぐり、王と神との間で問答が展開している。出家遁世思想を主題とすることの多いMithila王説話群の中でも、この種の問答はよく知られるが、それらの中でもNimijatakaの第1cd〜9,19詩節(第4-7詩節各pada abを除く)はかなり成立の古いものであることが分かった。そしてこの「Nimi王と神との問答」詩節群が「天界訪問」説話に添加されることにより、現行Pali第541話としての詩節全体が、NimiについてのJatakaとして知られることになったことを指摘した。また第10〜18詩節という新たな詩節群挿入の過程を知るために、各詩節テキストを精確に検討した。その結果、本来は仏教の修行とは必ずしも関わりないbrahmacariyaを称えるものであったNimi説話が、仏教的dhammaを説く問答へと変容する軌跡を解明することができた。この新たな詩節群の付加は一方で、行為の果報について語る別の新たな大量の詩節群、すなわち「地獄天界巡り」が、後代になって同Jatakaへ挿入されるきっかけともなっていた。平行して、Videha国王諸伝説についてこれまで行ってきた研究を総括する作業を進めている。すなわち、Nimijataka現行テキスト形成史という点からは、「問答」そして「天界訪問」「地獄天界巡り」へと続く主題の連鎖を生み出した過程を明らかにし、また古代インドにおける諸宗教聖典伝承という点からは、在家・出家主義両つを含む視点よりみた、バラモン教から仏教・ジャイナ教への文学的要素の取り込みの特徴を解明し、さらには仏教文献の立場からは、Jataka文献群のテキスト編纂過程解明をめざしているところである。
