项目摘要

本研究は、文学活動を通してラーホールにおけるインド・ムスリム知識層の形成過程を明らかにするものであり、その成果が、ウルドゥー文学研究のみならず、南アジア近現代史においても「知」の動態を知る手がかりとなることを目指した。期間中大英図書館を2度訪問し、19世紀後半から20世紀初期にかけてのパンジャーブ州における出版事情に関する資料を多数集めた。特に同図書館のみの所蔵にかかる出版物目録は、1868年から100年間のパンジャーブでの主たる出版物をまとめた記録であり、本資料によって、ラーホールにおける出版活動が19世紀半ば以降恒常的に増加していた傾向を明らかにできた。また、パンジャーブでの出版活動隆盛の背景には、ウルドゥー語のみならず、パンジャービー語による旺盛な出版活動があったことや、パンジャーブ各地の出版社が20世紀になって最新の印刷機械を導入したことで出版量が飛躍的に増大したことなどが確認できた。本研究成果は、岩波書店より『パキスタン-民族・国民・国家』(仮題)として平成15年内に刊行される。同書は研究代表者が編者の一人となって出版する、パキスタンに関する学術書だが、研究代表者は、ラーホールにおける文学空間の影響をパキスタンの国語問題の一例として示した。上記研究活動とともに、同時多発テロ以降のイスラーム復興運動に対する関心の高まりから、研究代表者は、南アジア、特にラーホール在住のムスリム知識人の紹介も行った。それは辞典・事典類における知識人の紹介や、ラーホールを中心とするムスリム知識人の思想や著作の紹介、あるいは知識人同士の交流・ネットワークを調査したものであった。さらに、南アジアのムスリム知識人マウドゥーディーの思想的影響を受けたアフガニスタンの動向に関しても単行本を含めた執筆活動を行った。
