本研究は鉄道省国際観光局が1930年代に計画的に建設した国際観光ホテルの形態意匠について扱うものである。とりわけ、この形態意匠の計画に与えた諸外国の建築動向の影響について明らかにし、当時の国際観光ホテルの意匠計画を建築史学上に位置付けるものである。平成14年度は、平成13年度に引き続き、欧州諸国における文献調査と現地調査、日本の国会図書館等での文献調査を行ない、諸外国の建築動向が国際観光ホテルの形態意匠に与えた影響の基本的な関連性についてその詳細を把握した。本調査により、1930年代当時の欧州のリゾート地形成の方法論と実例、そしてガイドブックなどに見られるツーリズムの実態は、日本のリゾート地形成や国際観光ホテルの意匠計画の雛形となった可能性を見出すことができた。なかでも、鉄道省国際観光局が押し進めた国際観光政策の立案過程における諸外国動向の影響については関連性が明確に認められ、これについていくつかの知見を明らかにしたところである。当時の国際観光ホテルには、欧米の既存のリゾート地が見立てられてそれがホテルの形態意匠に反映されるという、リゾートの質と建築意匠の双方の依存関係があったのである。また、これらの影響関係においては、建築技術者の人的交流があったのではないかとも推測される。今後は、こうした形態意匠的な側面からの検討のみではなく、実際的に以下に意匠が海を越えて伝搬していったか、また、これが外国人旅客のための施設計画に反映されていったかを明らかにしていきたい。
