前年度に開発した分析法により母乳の長期保存試料を分析しPBDEs汚染の解析を行った.その結果,我が国では1970年代から1980年代後半にかけて4臭素化物を中心とした臭素化ジフェニルエーテル(PBDEs)汚染が拡大したことが明らかとなった(1980年代に我が国では蓄積性の高い低臭素化ジフェニルエーテルが毎年1000トン程度使用されていたが,その後1990年代初頭からその使用は関連メーカーにより自主規制されている).大阪湾のスズキ中のPBDEs濃度は1989年から1999年に掛けて顕著に減少したと報告されている.国内の魚介類中のPBDEs濃度が減少していることから,当初,母乳中のPBDEs濃度も1990年代には経年的な減少傾向を辿るものと予想された.しかし今回の保存母乳の分析結果では明らかな減少傾向は認められなかった.この原因として輸入魚介類からのPBDEs摂取量の増大が考えられた.海外(特に北米や北欧)では近年水棲生物中のPBDEs濃度が上昇傾向にあることが報告されている(アメリカでは現在も低臭素化ジフェニルエーテルが使用されている).さらに我が国における食用魚介類の輸入依存率は近年上昇の一途を辿っている(例えば1985,90,95,2000年における輸入依存率は各々14,28,41,47%であり,現在では約50%を輸入に頼っているのが実情である).以上から,ポリ塩化ビフェニルやダイオキシンとは異なり,PBDEsにおいては輸入魚介類からの摂取量が日本近海の魚介類からの摂取量と比較して無視できない寄与を占めるものと推定された.
