これからの日本語教育を考えた場合,専門分野に対応した中・上級の日本語教育,すなわち「学術日本語教育」の充実を図ることが重要になってくる。その第一歩としてやらなければならないことは,日本語教育の専門家と人文・社会・自然科学の専門家が協力して,それぞれの専門分野に適した教材や教授法の開発に向けて議論していくことである。本研究は,このような共同研究の実現を目標として,国内外の専門家養成を目的とした中・上級日本語教育の実状を把握し,具体的な共同研究のあり方を探るためのフィージビリティ・スタディで,具体的には米国のカリフォルニア州立大学,コロラド州立大学,及びカナダのモントリオール大学における日本語教育の実態調査,日本語教育担当者との討議を中心に研究を進めた。調査,討議の結果まず明らかになったことは,これらのいずれの大学においても学術日本語教育の必要性は十分に認識されながら,具体的な方策はほとんど検討されていないということである。とくに指摘されたことは,中・上級用教材の絶対的な不足で,日本の研究者を中心にして教材開発のための共同研究の立ち上げへの強い要望があった。これについては,今後国内の研究者に働きかけを行い,具体的なプロジェクトの企画を検討していくことになった。また、海外共同研究者の山元啓史(カリフォルニア大学サンディエゴ校・客員研究員)の協力を得てwebを利用した単語学習,文法習得のためのオンライン学習プログラムを開発し,米国ケニヨン大学(オハイオ州)でテスト運用を行い,現在学習履歴,テスト結果などのデタを収集している。
