1. On-site observations of eyewitness identification procedure were conducted in England and the United States. Especially in England, video identification (VIPER system) was studied in details, interviewing the identification officer in charge and a solicit or familiar with the video procedure. In the United States, an interview with a New Jersey official, state attorney responsible for the adoption of its 2001 guidelines for eyewitness identification, was conducted. A district attorney was also interviewed in California in order to study their photo identification lineup procedure.2. A preliminary study of video identification was conducted in order to start a new system in this country. Specifically, we decided the video image on the screen and the movement of the target person in the video. Another issue was the clothing of the target person : A standard clothes was chosen. After these preparations, about 200 video images of undergraduates were recorded. For the procedure, we made several forms for informed consent. A form was for the notes by the researchers explaining purposes of the study, rights of the participants, and obligations of the researchers. Another was a consent form for the participants.The video images will be used for the study to form a database from which appropriate foil candidates were extracted. We also need a search system to utilize the video image database. These are our next research tasks.3. The head investigator participated in the drafting of the 2004 Guidelines for Eyewitness Testimony by the Japanese Society for Law and Psychology. He was responsible for the most of the section on eyewitness identification procedures.
