In this research, taking the Kujo family, one of the Sekkanke (the line of regents), as an example, I tried to describe the concrete state of the formation of the family and its succession in the medieval aristocrat society, which consisted of the order of family status.The main results are as follows.1 investigation, collection and arranging of unpublished historical materials1)I made a list and investigated a large quantity of records and documents, relating to the ancestors of the Kujo family, owned by the Kunaicho sharyobu and collected historical materials relating to the subject as mentioned above.2)I proceeded in researching diaries of the Kamakura period, like the Bunei daihajime kujisho or the Ninbuki diary.2 analysis and investigation of the collected historical materials1)Through the analysis of the documents written by Kujo Tadaie and his son Tadanori, I ascertained that a prerequisite condition for the claim of the Kujo family to the inauguration of Sekkan (ancient regents) was the existing awareness of being the lineage of the eldest son.2)I took notice of the competition for promotion among the aristocracy in the middle and later half of the Kamakura period, examined the main cause which decided promotion, and ascertained that in the aristocrat society of that time, to take a position in the court service according to the family status, was considered as a prerequisite condition for the succession and continuation of the family.3)On the basis of 1) and 2) I concluded that the mutual dependence between the official system of the court service and the private system of the family was one of the specific characteristic of the medieval aristocrat society.
