Comparative Study of Peace-building and Democratization in the former Yugoslavia

The author examined the meanings and problems of various interventions by international organizations and big powers for the conflict resolution in the former Yugoslavia. He pointed out the characteristics of the former Yugoslav conflicts in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. After that the domestic and international factors were indicated to explain the meaning of the ‘ethnic cleansing' in the process of conflicts.Moreover, he analyzed the process of peace-building and democratization after conflict resolution. Since the end of the Cold War, international organizations have been newly seized by the increasingly pervasive problems of civil conflict and have been required to play various roles in conflict resolution and reconstruction of post-conflict societies. In this way, international organizations have come to engaged in a broad range of nation-building activities.Nation-building is an all-inclusive yet somewhat elusive concept. It may contain concepts such as peace building, reconstruction of civil society and the transition to democracy and a market economy. Comparing with the process of the peace-building and democratization in these three conflicts, he could point out the tasks and problems of the engagement of international organizations and big powers.
