本研究は、リヴィウス、マキアヴェリ、ハリントンの三者を主要な研究対象とし、後二者がリヴィウスの『ローマ史』をどのように受容したのかを検証することで彼らの共和主義の特質を抽出し、近代共和主義思想の展開につき新たな展望を得ようとするものであり、本年度は、文献を収集するとともに、基本的なアイデアを固め、今後の研究を進める上での内外の批評を仰ぐことが中心となった。これまでの暫定的な見通しについては、『デモクラシーの政治学』(東大出版会、2002年)所収の「共和主義」の形で公表し、2003年2月の東京大学政治理論研究会、同3月の九州大学政治学研究会で有益なコメントを得た。また、同3月、千葉大学での国際会議「公共性の再興」では、ペーパー'What is republicanism not about?'を発表した。以上の活動を通じて得た知見は、第一に18世紀のヒュームやフェデラリストを初めから視野に入れた方が全体の議論の見通しがよくなること、第二に共和主義がすぐれて近代のものであること(すなわち、共和主義が君主政と専制をセットで攻撃するのは、古代ギリシアのポリスの政治学が確立した、専制とポリスの政治の区別--後者の中で初めて6政体分類が成立する--が近代では理解されなかったがゆえであるということ)、そして第三に、ジョン・ロックの議論が共和主義とは対照的なのは、そこに抵抗権や人民主権論が含まれていることのみならず、人民及び国王の裁量権が認められていることにこそあると考えられることであった。
