本研究の目的は,転機によるスポーツ選手の動機づけの発達プロセスをナラティブ・アプローチによって明らかにすることであった。スポーツ選手にこれまでの競技歴や重要な出来事,転機の経験,現在のやる気,競技不安などについてインタビューを行った。またそれとは別にアンケート形式で転機の経験と転機によってどのように自分が変わってきたかについても調べた。収集された転機の語りは,その類似性を基準に分類された。インタビューの結果,特徴的な語りとして,「自己転換の語り」「空白期間の語り」「アンカーとしての出来事の語り」の3つが見出された。自己転換の語りとは,例えば転機の前はAだったけれど,転機の後はBに変わったというような語りである。空白期間の語りとは,例えば転機の前にスランプや目標を失った期間があったというような語りである。アンカーとしての出来事の語りは,転機の経験の結果,自分の信念や価値観を見い出したというような語りである。スポーツ選手は,これらの特徴的な転機の語りによって,自分がこれまで成長してきたことを再認識することができたり,転機の経験に基づいた信念や価値観を持つことが可能になったりすることで,その後の競技生活においてしばしば直面する悩みや迷いに対して,やる気を自律的に維持・回復することができるようになるのではないかと考えられた。つまり,転機の経験が動機づけを維持する原点になっているということが示唆された。またアンケート調査においては,「自己転換の語り」がもっとも多く見られた.結果からは,多くのスポーツ選手は自分が成長してきたということを転機によって認識することで,動機づけを保っていることが示唆された.
