1.【研究成果】奈良末・平安初期の仏教を宗派性や教学的進展のみで論じる従来の研究の問題点が鮮明になった。その結果、国家や王権との関係の重要性が明確になったのである。(A)従来の空海研究を再検討した結果、空海の密教者としての活躍は、やはり宗派的活躍や数学的活躍ばかりが強調され、国家の仏教政策の中での位置付けは、十分にされてこなかった。その上で、空海が本格的に活躍する「淳和朝」以降の護国経典や寺院など国家の仏教政策に注目し、次の点が明らかになった。(1)空海と淳和天皇・仁明天皇の両天皇との関係が重要であり、空海にとって守護すべきは即位した「王」であった。(2)空海は、唐の制度を導入しつつ、初めて後の「御願寺」にあたる寺院を建立するとともに、国家の中心となる東寺の建立に関係するなど、天皇の身体と国家の両面を明確に分離して護持する嚆矢となった。(B)このような特に寺院政策と王権との関係をより明確にするために、大寺で行われる天皇等の忌日法会、国忌の分析をすすめた。その結果、これまで「天武系」から「天智系」への王統交代論の史料に活用されていた国忌の変遷だが、その点はまったく資料的根拠がないということが明確になった。むしろ重要なのは、国忌が、これまで個々に設置されてきた南都の諸大寺から、まさに「淳和朝」より東寺・西寺へと集中するようになった点である。以上AB両者より、「淳和期」を画期として、仏教政策と天皇の権威が併行して変質することが明らかになった。2.【研究計画の実施】(1)東京大学史料編纂所や内閣文庫などで聖教を調査し、空海の実践した後七日御修法などの法会の解明に努めた。(2)国忌については、奈良古代史サマーセミナーおよび国立歴史博物館の研究会で報告を行った。(3)空海および国忌のいずれもほ成稿を終え、投稿などの準備をしている最中である。
