平成15年度の研究では、前年度の海外研究調査の成果及び、関連研究図書の購入に基づいて、確実な研究の進捗を見ることが出来た。海外研究調査としては、ロンドンでの公文書館(Public Record Office)及び、ケンブリッジ大学チャーチル・コレッジのチャーチル史料センターの所蔵史料などを閲覧して、1950年代イギリス外交史研究として、とりわけアンソニー・イーデン外相の役割に注目した調査を進めることに成功した。その成果として、1951年から1955年までのイギリス外交を論じた研究書である『外交による平和-アンソニー・イーデンと二〇世紀の国際政治(仮題) 』を株式会社有斐閣から刊行することが決まり、ほぼ原稿を完成させる段階まで到達した。この研究書は、平成16年秋頃には刊行を予定している。この研究成果により、1950年代半ばのヨーロッパ安全保障体制の確立を、欧州統合と冷戦の緊張緩和という観点から、とりわけ「ドイツ問題」の解決としてのNATO体制の確立に焦点をあてて解明することが可能となった。また、その中でもイギリス外交が、米ソの狭間に立って独特な緊張緩和外交を展開して、国際政治の中で一定の影響力を保持し得たことを明らかにして、「外交による平和」という観点から、イギリス外交の役割を検討した。今後はこの研究成果に基づいて、1950年代後半から1960年代前半の外交史を、西側体制の再編という観点から検討することにしたい。
