本研究の目的は、幕末期に徳川政権よりオランダへ派遣され、ヨーロッパ政治制度を日本の国家政治に先駆的に導入した西周と津田真道の営為を検討し、近代日本の法・政治制度確立黎明期に彼らが果たした役割の政治思想史的意義を解明することにある。二年間の研究計画に基づく、最終年度にあたる本年度の研究課題及びその成果は、三つに大別される。一つ目の課題は、前年度の成果を活字化することにあった。昨年は、二度のオランダ・ライデンにおける調査を通じて、西と津田がオランダ留学を通じて学んだ法学思想を解明し、帰国後、彼らが儒学を中心とした思想的伝統を再構成するなかで導き出した、立憲君主政体を理念とする体制構想の特質を考察した。本年度はまず、この研究成果をもとに「西周の初期体制構想-近代日本における立憲思想の形成とオランダ法学-」(『東京都立大学法学会雑誌』、2003年7月)を執筆した。続いて第二に、さらなる探究を深め、特に「哲学」の訳語創出でも知られる西周を中心に、彼らが留学を通じて触れた、同時代オランダ学問世界総体の傾向を検討し、明治維新以降、明六社などを中心に展開された彼らの学問活動の特質を解明した。その研究成果の一部は、2003年7月に東京・法政大学で開かれた国際学術会議・日韓政治思想学会にて「明治初期知識人における宗教論の諸相-西周と中村敬宇を中心に-」として報告した。さらに8月には再びオランダを訪れ、継続的な資料調査を実施。そこでの成果をも含めた同題の論文が、2004年5月発刊の政治思想学会・学会誌『政治思想研究』に掲載される予定である。そして最後の成果は、この間の研究を総括する方で、博士論文「近代日本における立憲主義とオランダ法学-西周の思想形成とその発展としての功利主義受容をめぐって-」を、東京都立大学大学院社会科学研究科に提出したことである。学位は、2004年3月25日に授与される予定である。

The purpose of this study is to introduce the Tokugawa government in the late Tokugawa period and the political system of Japan in the Western Zhou Dynasty.
