ベトナム・ホーチミン市(旧サイゴン・チョロン)の都市形成過程を解明し、開港期から現在にまで至る同市の都市構造の変遷を明らかにすることを研究目的とした。研究調査内容は大きく臨地調査と史料調査にわかれ、臨地調査では具体的にホーチミン市中心部の街区を選定し実測・インタビュー等を行った。史料調査では、ベトナム国内の第二国立文書館、国立図書館等、フランスの海外文書館、フランス建築協会等にて関連史料の調査を実施した。以上は、ホーチミン市建築大学、パリ・ベルヴィル建築学校との協力体制を築いて実施された。ホーチミン市中心部はかつて阮朝の城砦であったが、その形態はフランス側の植民地期の記録出版により凡そ復元可能であり、また植民地化以降フランス兵営となった様子もフランス側史料により解明可能である。これらに関して史料所在は確認されたが、目録作成のため追加的な調査が必要である。植民地化以降、メコンデルタの物産集積地として水路を取り込んだ都市構造が出現したが、水質悪化等の理由により埋め立てられ、現在にまで引き継がれる街路構造が形成された。この間の事情はBullletin de la Soc. Etudes Indochinoises等の植民地期史料の調査により明らかとなった。中心部街区に関しては、インド人金融業層、さらに華僑の大規模土地所有による面的開発が認められた。土地開発の手法としての連続建て住宅建設のシステムを、実測調査と資料調査で得た図面により明らかにした。植民地統治の進展とともにサイゴン・チョロンについては都市計画プランが何度か立案されているが、フランスでの史料調査により都市計画報告書、図面史料等を入手しその内容を考察した。以上に関して関係学会での発表を、特に海外において行い、国際的な研究ネットワークの構築に努めた。
