ハイパーテキストのナビゲーション機能のデザインについて2つの実験を行った。実験ではメニュー形式のナビゲーション機能を用いて情報を探索するという課題を被験者に与え、探索時間、探索の正答率と眼球運動を測定した。最初の実験ではメニューの項目間の水平方向の距離を変化させ、これが探索行動に与える影響を調べた。眼球運動データの分析の結果、各項目間の距離が小さすぎても大きすぎても探索の効率が落ちることが示された。ここでメニューをデザインするにあたって難しいのは理想的なバランスを明らかにすることであるが、最初の実験では項目間の距離が視角で1.2度の場合に探索効率が最もよかった。これはディスプレイまでの視距離が70cmの場合、ディスプレイ上で約1.5cmに相当する。2番目の実験ではこの「最適な」項目の空間配置と項目を色分けした場合との比較を行った。空間配置に関しては0度と1.2度の2つの条件を用いた。色分けに関しても色分けありと色分けなしの2条件を用いた。その結果、眼球運動の大きさ、注視点数、探索時間により示される探索効率には色分けの効果は見られないことが明らかになった。これに対して空間的な配置の効果は有意であり、また、有意な相互作用も認められた。情報探索の効率は各項目の色分けをせずに項目間に1.2度の距離を開けたときがもっともよく、色分けをして項目間の距離を0度としたとき最も悪かった。色分けありで項目間の距離1.2度の場合には、色分けなしの場合に比べ情報探索の効率は悪かった。実験の結果は2004年中国で開催された第28回国際心理学会および第44回ドイツ心理学会にて発表した。
