项目摘要

日本学術振興会特別研究員として、1年目、2年目と仮名文におけるわかりやすさについての考察を行ってきた。3年目の今年は、「わかりやすさ」とはどういうものなのかということについて集中的に考察するために、共同研究の場を利用しながら、現代語における「です・ます体」の諸機能を考察対象に研究を行ってきた。研究成果の要旨は以下の通り。伝達のために利用できる言語・非言語情報はメディアごとに制約があるため,「わかりやすさ」の表現様式もそれに応じて変化する。対話場面では音声特徴をはじめ,情報の繰り返しや聞手への確認,表情といった手法を用いてわかりやすさを表示できるが,そうした手法がとれない「書くメディア」では,子供向けの新聞,外国人向けの情報提供などに多くあらわれるように,わかりやすさを意図して「です・ます体」が採用されている。しかし,その「わかりやすさ」は情報伝達内容の質を変換させるような性質のものではなく,具体的な話手から具体的な聞手に伝えられたかのような雰囲気をつくりだす,いわば「装われたわかりやすさ」である。多くの「書くメディア」において「です・ます体」がわかりやすさのマーカーとして機能しているのは,聞手への距離を示す「です・ます」を使用することによって,具体的な話手と聞手が共在しているかのように表現されることによるものだと考える。
