本年は、昨年までに集めた資料等を読みこなしつつ、その成果を論文としてまとめることに力を注いだ。具体的に活字化されたものは、昨年より論文化の準備を進めてきた西村茂樹に関する論文二編である。まず論文「近代啓蒙主義的歴史観と歴史的個体性-西村茂樹の歴史認識-」では、西村茂樹の幕末期の歴史認識を検討し、西村が洋学との出会いによって啓蒙主義的な視座を獲得しつつも、しかし以前より持していた歴史的な個体性を重視する視座をも失うことなく、普遍を個別の位相のもとに見る歴史認識を形成することになったと論じ、そのような歴史認識が以後の西村の発想の基底に位置しつづけることになったことを明らかにした。また「西村茂樹『日本道徳論』の形成過程-国民道徳論の前期的形成-」では、西村茂樹の主著『日本道徳論』の形成過程を、草稿類を丹念に検討することによって明らかにし、儒教に基づく修身教育の主張が、時期を経るにしたがいって、国民としての団結を重視する「国民道徳」へと再編されていくこと、その意味で西村の『日本道徳論』は、後年のいわゆる「国民道徳論」の前期的形成を告げる作品であることを明らかにした。また、本年は、神戸に出張して日本弘道会の支部関係資料を調査し、また京都府立総合資料館に出張し、本多辰次郎関係文書を調査し、そこに含まれる反欧化主義関係の資料調査ならびにかねてから調査をすすめていた深谷博治文書との比較検討を行った。以上の他、谷干城・鳥尾小弥太・三浦梧楼といった人物に関しても、論文化の構想をまとめることができた。特にその際、それぞれの人物の思想と行動を総合的に比較・検討して体系化し、その思想的・政治的・社会的背景をさぐることに留意した。これらについては、今後成果として発表するために、論文化していく作業に取り掛かりたいと考えている。
