本年度は、蕉風連句の作風研究に着手し、蕉風確立期とされる貞享元年以降に芭蕉が一座して巻いた半歌仙以上の全連句作品のなかから恋句をすべて抽出して、連歌論『至宝抄』の説く恋の句の「本意」に則った句作であるかどうかということについて、比較分析を行った。その結果、蕉風連句における恋の句の詠み方および、芭蕉の恋句の特質として、以下のような特徴が認められた。1,芭蕉の恋句はその7割(121句中83句)が、また蕉風連句全体においてもその約7割強(456句中316句)が、恋の「本意」に忠実な句作であったことが判明した。さらに芭蕉の恋句には、故意に「本意」を裏切るような詠み方をした例がまったくないことから、芭蕉自身は基本的に「本意」を尊重したかたちで恋の句を詠もうとしていたといえる。2,和歌以来の伝統的な恋の「本意」を重んじながらも、一方では俳諧としての「新しみ」を追究してゆく方法として、芭蕉は「憂き恋」という恋の「本意」の枠組みは設定しておいたまま、その内実において「恋が報われない要因」としてさまざまな新しい「憂」の要素を加えることによって、「新しみ」を見出してゆく手法を試みていたと考えられる。3,2,で述べた手法は、元禄2年から3年にかけて芭蕉が試みていることが確認できる。この時期は、以前から芭蕉の恋句の作風が変化した頃であると考えられており、つまりこの時期に「本意」に対する新たなアプローチ方法が試みられていたことを裏付けるものではないだろうか。だがこのような手法は、元禄6、7年に至ると一切使われなくなることからは、「本意」と「新しみ」とを同時に追究してゆくことがいかに困難であったかということが推測される。
