平成16年度においても前年度に続き、13世紀後半ビザンツ帝国の教会と文化について集中的に検討を行った。1261年、ラテン帝国を打倒し、帝都コンスタンティノープルを奪回したビザンツ皇帝ミカエル・パライオロゴスは、フランク人やトルコ人などの敵対的諸外国勢力から帝国を防衛するためローマ教皇に教会合同を提起し、それによって西方からの軍事・宗教的な支援を引き出そうと試みた。その後、1274年に開催された第2回リヨン公会議で合同が決議されると、ビザンツ国内においては、ローマ教会を上位とする合同にたいして大規模な抵抗運動が生じた。先行研究においては、修道士が反対勢力の中心にあって積極的な抗議行動を行ったと一般的に解されているが、こうした従来の理解は同時代の歴史的現実をどの程度、反映しているのだろうか。以上のような問題関心から、私は13世紀後半の教会合同問題に関するギリシア語史料を検討しなおし、大まかに次の2点、すなわち、合同に反対する修道士グループは支持する総主教後街によって二つの陣営に分かれ、従来、先行研究が指摘してきたような両グループの共同は存在しなかったこと、そして、修道士の多くは処罰への懸念から消極的な抵抗・生存戦略を採用していたことを明らかにした。この考察結果については、'Monks, Ascetics, and the Union of Lyons'と題する英語による口頭発表を、平成16年5月に北米、ウェスタン・ミシガン大学で開催際された第39回国際中世学会において行った。現在、同学会での報告原稿をもとにした日本語論文を準備中である。また、平成16年度において、私は主専門であるビザンツ帝国史をより広い視野・コンテクストから再考するために、十字軍史と初期キリスト教史についても調査を行った。この試みに関して、A.E.Laiou and R.P.Mottahedeh ed., The Crusades from the Perspective of Byzantium and the Muslim World(Washington, D.C., 2001)と大貫隆著『イエスという経験』(岩波書店、2003年)の書評を史学研究会会誌『史林』に発表した。

In the 16th year of Heisei, the church and culture of the empire were concentrated in the second half of the 13th century In 1261, when the empire was overthrown, the imperial government was retaken, and the foreign forces opposed to the empire were attacked, and the papal church was contracted to defend the empire, and the military and religious support of the west was introduced. After the 1274 year, the second session of the General Assembly was held, and a large-scale resistance movement was established. The first study is to study the extent to which active protest actions and general solutions are reflected in the history of contemporary society. The above problems concern the church contract in the second half of the 13th century. The historical data of the church contract are discussed in detail. The two points of the contract are discussed in detail. The monk's contract is opposed to the support of the bishop's back street. The two arrays are divided into three parts. The first study is to criticize the common existence of the church contract. Monks are often punished by suspense, passive resistance, and survival strategies. The results of this investigation include the following: 'Monks, Ascetics, and the Union of Lyons' in English: oral presentation, opening ceremony of the 39th International Society of the Middle Ages in May 1916. Now, I'm preparing a Japanese paper for the homecoming. In 2016, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducted a survey on the history of the empire and the history of the crusades.
