今年度はビザンツ帝国末期における写本生産の問題を検討した。いわゆるビザンツ写本の研究は従来、美術史家と文献学者の独壇場であったが、近年、写本の作成経緯や利用のされ方が歴史学者の注目を集めている。言うまでもなく写本は書かれ、読まれ、さらには売買や貸借の対象となる中世の書物メディアであり、写本とそのコンテクストの関係を精査することで、研究者は同時代の社会や文化の知られざる諸側面に迫ることができる。本研究で具体的に取り上げたのは、現在、パリ国立文書館に所蔵されている一写本、パリ・ギリシア語写本857番(Codex Parisinus Graecus857)である。この写本は13世紀ビザンツのとある修道院で作成(コピー)されたものであり、11世紀の修道士パウロス・エウエルゲティノスの箸作『シュナゴゲ』(古代の修道文献のアンソロジー的作品)の第四部を内容とする。一部の学者は、この写本の作者(写字生)が写本末尾に書き込んだ韻文に現れるいくつかの固有名詞に注目し、13世紀から14世紀にかけて二度コンスタンティノープル総主教を務め、特異な教会改革を試みたアタナシオス(在位1289-93年、1303-9年)がその作者であると推測した。この特定の写本は二つの問題を提起する。一つは、一部の学者が推測するとおり、パリ写本の作者が総主教アタナシオスその人であるのかという問題、もう一つは、『シュナゴゲ』というテクストの普及度とその影響の大きさである。今年度の研究では、二つ目の問題を視野に入れたうえで、一つ目の問題に照準を合わせた。すなわち、従来の研究者が提示した状況証拠に加え、写本のテクスト『シュナゴゲ』の読書の痕跡が総主教アタナシオスの思想と行動に確認できる点から、ガレシオン(エフェソス近郊の山岳修道院共同体)のアタナシオスと名乗る写字生と後の総主教アタナシオスが同一人物である可能性が高いと結論づけた(拙稿「ガレシオンの修道士アタナシオスとは何者か」『史林』90巻4号)。一方、『シュナゴゲ』の写本は13世紀以降、大量に生産されており、ビザンツ末期の修道世界におけるその人気と、それが修道士らに与えた影響は甚大であったと考えられる。この問題については現在検討を進めている。
