15世紀フランドル絵画の社会的・宗教的役割を検討する上で、ヤン・ファン・エイク作の《ロランの聖母子》は、注文主表現の革新性と機能の重層性という点で、ひとつの指標となる作品である。研究者代表は《ロランの聖母子》を中心としたファン・エイク作品と後の世代への展開を分析しつつ、ファン・エイクと同時代に活躍したフランドルの画家ロベール・カンパン(フレマールの画家)との比較検討も進めた。特にカンパンの《太陽の聖母子》を取り上げたのは、この作品が過去に注目されてこなかった上に、聖母子に向かい合う祈祷者の表現が、《ロランの聖母子》とは異なる役割の特殊性・革新性を有しているように思われるからである。分析の結果、《太陽の聖母子》には祈祷者の権威を暗示する表現が見られ、ファン・エイク作品と同様に注文主の積極的な関与が伺えること、また、聖母子の表現には当時議論の盛り上がっていた「無原罪の御宿り」を支持する役割が付与されていることが新たに明らかになった。聖母子の表現は、シクストゥスIV世が「無原罪の御宿り」を推進したこともあり、15世紀後半以降のフランドル絵画に普及していく。《太陽の聖母子》は注文主の意図を強く反映した、15世紀前半のフランドル絵画の革新的な風潮を示す例として捉えられるが、一方で聖母子の出現を自然と超自然の均衡の中で描く表現などには《ロランの聖母子》と比べると保守的な特徴も残しており、改めてファン・エイクという画家の先進性が示される結果となった。以上の研究の成果はベルギー、ブリュッセル自由大学の考古学・美術史学科の紀要に間もなく発表される予定である。
