项目摘要

今年度は、日本中世前期の王家における主たる経済基盤の一つである女院領が、実際に王家の中でどのように利用され、どのような歴史的意義を有していたのかということ、さらにそこから、女院とはどのような存在であったのかという、いまだに解明されていなかった問題に取り組んだ。昨年度行った「安楽寿院文書」の翻刻と検討という基礎的研究をベースに、御願寺(安楽寿院)領から女院領を見るという視角を導入して研究を進めた。まず女院領の約六割は複数の御願寺領で構成されており、その中でも鳥羽院御願寺の安楽寿院領は最大規模であったことから、これを検討の対象とした。検討の結果、安楽寿院の中の各堂舎は別々の事情をもって建立され、それぞれ所領群が設定されて維持されたことがわかった。さらに「安楽寿院文書」に記載された予定収支の検討から、全ての堂舎別収入は、各堂舎における仏事やそれに関わる諸経費として消費されていたこともわかり、安楽寿院はいわば堂舎別秩序のもとに存続していたと言える。特に本御塔では、発願者鳥羽院の追善仏事が行われていたこともわかった。そして、この追善仏事は、安楽寿院領を含んだ女院領を所持する女院が代々主催していた。女院領を伝領した女院が王家の父祖の追善仏事を主催していたこと自体は従来から指摘されていたが、先述のように御願寺領は全て仏事費用であるので、より厳密には、女院領ではなく御願寺領を所持する者こそが、その御願寺に纏わる人物の追善仏事を主催し行使することができたと言える。以上から、「女院領」とは王家の父祖の追善費用としての御願寺領の集合体であり、女院とは王家において父祖の追善を担当した仏事主催者であることを新たに明らかにした。
