The man developed the defensive auditory mechanism to automatically detect the incoming abnormal sounds. This system was revealed by investigating the mismatch negativity (MMN) in the auditory cortex. The change-detection system as reflected by the MMN requires the storage of the previous state of the acoustic environment for detecting a deviating sound. According to the memory trace theory, MMN is generated by the comparison process between sound change and the neural trace of the frequent preceding stimuli stored in sensory memory. Such an event-storage is related to the brain mechanism termed the temporal window of integration (TWI) which integrates the closely presented sounds into single information units. Based on the temporal integration theory, we found that the memory trace should be represented as time-functional information of 160-170 ms (1997,1998,1999, & 2001).In this research project, we evaluated precisely the change of deviation-detection sensitivity inside sensory memory as a function of time, which is reflected by TWI (2004), and found time might be compressed in the neural trace of sound (2005). In addition, we found the cognitive function reflected by transient gamma-band response should be dissociated from that reflected by MMN (2005). We reported the probability effect on the development of memory trace (2006). We also revealed the impairment in activation of a frontal attention-switch mechanism in schizophrenics (2004), and investigated the temporally integrative functions (or time flow) of auditory sensory memory in schizophrenia. Consequently, we found that schizophrenia should cause the impaired temporal function in the sensory memory. A part of the findings were presented in several symposiums (2nd SICPB2006,IPEG2006,8th IEPS, MMN2003,36th Japanese clinical neurophysiology congress). All of the results will be reported until the end of 2007 school year.
