本研究の目的は、大きな変革期を迎えている日本の小売市場について、比較制度分析の観点から分析することにあった。本研究の作業は三つに分けられる。すなわち、第一に日本の小売市場の均衡を正確に把握する作業、第二に日本の小売市場を相対化させるための諸外国の小売市場の均衡を正確に把握する作業、そして第三にこれらの異なる市場の均衡メカニズムを共通の枠組みで説明するための理論的フレームワークを構築する作業である。研究最終年度にあたる本年度は、各作業のまとめを行った。第一の作業においては、業態間の分業と競争の状態を整理した。具体的な業態としては、総合スーパー(GMS)、百貨店、専門店チェーン、地域スーパー、個人経営商店を取り上げた。業態間の代替・補完関係を明確にした上で、具体的な店舗がそれぞれどの業態に分類されるかを見た。具体的な店舗間の分業と競争状態を見ることにより、実際の均衡を見ることができた点は成果があったと思われる。ただし、小売業は変化の激しい産業である。実際に店舗の入れ替わりも早い。今回の研究期間中には総合スーパーと百貨店の含併も起きた。均衡の安定性をどのように評価するかは、今後の課題としたい。第二の作業においては、ニューヨーク、香港、バンコクの比較を整理した。今回の研究においては、対象を都市型小売業に絞った。これは、研究の進行につれて、人口集積地域である都市とそれ以外の地域においては、小売業の展開に根本的な違いが生じていることが明らかとなったためである。都市型独自の店舗が一定の力を発揮する点で、各都市の小売業は共通点を持っていた。しかし、グローバル型の小売業のシェア進捗も、各都市において差こそあれ着実に進行しつつある。これが新たな均一均衡への移行期であるかの判断は、時間をおく必要がある。第三の作業においては、小売業における分業と競争のメカニズムの整理を行った。小売業は複数の業態が同様の商品を扱っているという特長がある。このためマルチマーケット・コンタクトの概念が重要となる。しかも小売業の競争は静学的ではなく動学的(ダイナミック)なものである。このため、ダイナミック・マルチマーケット・コンタクトのモデルの構築が必要となる。今回の研究では、実際の小売市場の複数均衡を完全に説明できるモデルの構築までは至らなかったが、これらの概念を用いて、上記の現象のいくつかを説明できることを確認した。
