16年度は、15年度に収集した史料の分析につとめた。17世紀は、ルネサンス人文主義者らによる教育論の隆盛期であり、男性と差異化されながらも女性教育論が中・上流階層を中心に論じられ始めていた。と同時に、子育て・教育における母役割の重要性が注目され始め、特に宗教教育における「新しい母」役割についての助言書がまとまって出版・再版された時期でもある。本研究は、このような時期である17世紀英国の女性の教育と母役割との関係を明らかにすることを目的に始められた、結果、現代社会においても強力に人々の意識を規定している「人間形成を決定する幼少期の母子関係」という枠組自体が、17世紀宗教改革期の霊性をめぐる世界観の変容、および人文主義による人間観、自然観の変容という大きな歴史的転換のなかで、徐々に形成され始めていたことを確認することができた。すなわち、一方では「弱き性」として霊的世界から排除されていた女性が、祈りのみを信仰の証とせざるを得なくなるような霊的世界自体のゆらぎのなかで、まさにその祈りを奨励するという役割にとどまり続けながらも、子どもの内面世界を統御する霊性というテーマについて発言し始めた。これは、霊性の領域についての男女の平等性が意識され始めた証左といえる。また、出産・子育ての場面で階層を問わず多くの人々が従っていた「魔術的」儀礼や慣習が宗教刷新運動のなかで衰退していく時期に、こうした母の助言書が多く書かれたことは、子育て史において特筆すべき点である(論文1)。他方で、人文主義者エラスムスは、「新しい母」と題する対話において、アリストテレスの身体/精神二元論を根拠に、女性を、子どもを「産み育てる」身体を「自然」によって与えられた存在と見なすことによって、母役割の重要性を強調した(論文2)。以上により、17世紀英国社会においては、未だ母役割についての一定の自明的な観念は不在であったこと、しかしながら徐々に、母の身体と子どもの精神が密接に結びつけられていく一過程が示された。なお、本研究から得られた知見は、身体の差異が、性差の重大決定要素として権威づけられ、ジェンダーをセックスと区分しうる概念として認識する、18世紀以降の人間観の生成過程の一端をも示すものである。現在、性差研究において、ジェンダー概念が成立させる認識基盤、換言すればセックス自体の歴史性、社会的規定性を問うことが重要視され、研究が進められている。女性が、「産み育てる性」として規定され、同時にセックスが生物学的性差として固定化普遍化されていくプロセスの研究の課題についても、整理を行った(論文4および3)。
