今年度は分担者を務める科研費基盤研究(A)「野生チンパンジーにおける新奇行動の展開と文化的行動の発達過程(#16255007、代表者:西田利貞・(財)日本モンキーセンター所長)」の援助により、約50日間海外渡航し、マハレ山塊国立公園のチンパンジーにおける哺乳類食の技術を「地域間比較」あるいは「獲物-捕食者関係」という視点により調査したが、同時に、本研究テーマにおいて分析対象とする音声行動の資料についても、超指向性マイクロフォンとデジタル録音機のセットやビデオカメラを利用して収集した。すなわち、161時間の行動記録には50時間の映像音声資料が含まれており、これを利用して、本研究テーマに関わる次のような資料の分析を進めている。第一に、チンパンジーが「恐怖」の情動表出として発すると考えられるhoo callを3事例について、至近距離で映像音声記録することができた。いずれも同所的大型捕食者であるヒョウの存在と関連して発せられたものと推測できる。今回最大の収穫は、ツチブタの死体に遭遇したチンパンジーが情動表出しつつ発声した音声を録音できたことであろう。この事例は、2006年7月に大阪大学にて開催される日本霊長類学会大会にて報告した後、国際学術誌に投稿する予定である。第二に、今回、個体追跡調査した2個体は、過去の野外調査においても、音声行動の記録を行っており、成長・加齢あるいは社会的地位の変化に伴う、音声の種類による発声頻度の変化、音響的特徴の変化を調べることが可能である。フィールドで得た印象としては、いったん成熟した個体の音声は観察者の耳でも容易に判別できるほど特徴があり、他個体がこれを認知し、社会的情報として利用している可能性がきわめて高い。今後、チンパンジーが個体認知の手がかりとして利用する音声特性の候補を音響学的に調べ上げ、野外における検証の作業へとつなげていきたい。
