企業的養豚経営においても、1990年以降、特に、豚肉の需給構造の変化、つまり、養豚経営外部の要因に規定されて上向展開がはかられてきた。そして、今日、企業的養豚経営は、生産者、農協、農外資本の資本毎に設立されており、そこでは資本毎に特徴のある経営展開がみられた。ただし、このような資本の性格の差異に伴う経営展開も基本的には豚肉の需給構造の変化に規定された展開であった。加えて、1990年後半以降、これら企業的養豚経営で農場が新設される場合、「原種豚-F1-肉豚」が単位となっており、そこでの農場の規模も豚肉の需給構造の変化に規定されて大規模化していた。さらにそこでは、高い資本装備率の実現や、作業分化の進展、1人当たり繁殖雌豚常時飼養頭数の多もがもたらされていた。加えて、近年設立された大規模農場では、繁殖雌豚1頭当たり出荷頭数や、出荷される肉豚の品質ともに高い技術水準が実現されていた。つまり、そこでは、従来指摘されてきたような上向展開過程の低収益性の問題やその規定要因となる技術問題、費用問題が解決されている経営の存在も明らかとなった。一方、依然として、国内飼養頭数の約6割を占める農家においてはその問題が顕在化していた。このため、農家においては企業的養豚経営との間において厳しい経営間競争にさらされており、加えて、今後、メキシコからの輸入を含めますます輸入圧力が強まっていくことが確実視される中で、農家においては一層厳しい状況に追い込まれていくこととなる。これら農家が、今日その生き残りをかけてどのような取り組みを行っているのか、その結果、いかに効率的な肉豚生産システムを形成しているのかを実証していくことが、今後の残された課題となってくる。
