長さが有限の時系列データから線形トレンドを見積もる場合には、システム内の過程で生じる内部変動が存在することにより、「見かけのトレンド」が生じる。本研究では、この内部変動に起因する見かけのトレンドについて確率統計理論を用いて調べるとともに、トレンドの検出可能性を調べた。一般的な統計的仮定のもと、データ長に依存する見かけのトレンドのモーメントや分布関数を理論的に求めた。内部変動が正規分布に従う場合、見かけのトレンドも正規分布に従う。非正規分布の一般的な場合、エッジワース展開を用いて見かけのトレンドの分布関数を得た。見かけのトレンドの分布関数を得るためには、内部変動の分布関数が必要となる。そこで、数値実験により得られた長期間データの解析を行った。トレンドのない年周サイクルをもつ外部強制のもとで行ったメカニスティック循環モデルを用いた15,200年積分、および大気海洋結合モデルを用いた1000年積分(Nozawa et al. 2006)のデータを解析した。得られたモデル大気の内部変動の分布関数をもとに、真のトレンドの検出可能性を調べた。成層圏では、帯状平均気温の内部変動は突然昇温現象により大きな季節依存性をもっており、標本分散を小さくするためにデータを年平均することは適当ではない。統計的に有意なトレンドを検出するために必要なデータ長を求めた。夏期の極域成層圏では、20年のデータから99%の統計的有意性で-0.5K/decadeの帯状平均気温の寒冷化トレンドを検出することができるが、冬季には150年以上必要である。一方、対流圏では、内部変動の分布関数は一年を通して似ており、データを年平均することができる。およそ35年のデータから、半球平均および年平均気温の0.05K/decadeの温暖化トレンドを検出することができる。
