「ゲズ・ド・バルザックの雄弁と『手紙』-フランス語散文の曲がり角-」ゲズ・ド・バルザック(1597-1654)は、近代フランス語散文の形成に寄与した17世紀前半最大の作家である。彼の友人であったデカルトは、1624年のバルザックの『手紙』刊行と同時に始まる「手紙論争」に際して進んでバルザック擁護の筆を執った。本論文では、ゲズ・ド・バルザックの手紙=散文作法の原理を探り、デカルトの哲学原理との共通点を明るみに出すことで、散文技術に関するデカルトの独特な見解の一端を提示した。ゲズ・ド・バルザックの『手紙』は宮廷やサロンに集う文芸アマチュアのオネットムたちの間で大成功を収めたが、学問的伝統を固守する学識者たちからは逆に激しい非難が浴びせられる。従来、「雄弁」ジャンルにふさわしいとされた哲学・政治・宗教に関わる「高尚な」主題を、日常的話題に限定すべきとされる「書簡」ジャンルにもちこみ、加えて、本来「卑俗」とされるこの書簡ジャンルにおいて、それにふさわしからぬ「崇高な文体」をあえて用いることの是非が問われたのである。17世紀において「文体」といえば、「平易体」「中庸体」「崇高体」の三文体を指す。そのうえで各文体に見合う主題がそれぞれ厳格に定められていた。バルザックはこの規則をものともせず、独自の雄弁理念に奉じてフランス語による独自の「完壁な文体」を探り続ける。それは同時に、16世紀末すでに退廃の極みにあったフランス語散文に新たな息吹を与えるための模索でもあった。博識と規則の遵守をもってよしとする当時の散文作法を「偽の雄弁」と断罪するバルザックは、人間個人に具わる「自然の理性」をもってすべてを再審に付し、古代ローマ黄金期のキケロの文体に倣いつつそれを凌駕することを目指しながら、母語である「フランス語」でもって「自己」を探究し「自己」を表現しきることに「真の雄弁」の原理を見出す。この大胆な雄弁理念を通じて、ラテン語を知らないフランスの一般人に専門知識が開かれることをもまた目指した。これはデカルトの「理性」にもとづく哲学改革に符合するものとして注目に値する。反レトリック主義哲学者のデカルトが、修辞的文体に覆われたバルザックの文章を称えた理由も、こうした共通理念があってのことと知れば、よりよく理解されるだろう。

The "rational" approach to philosophical reform The philosophy of anti-philosophy is not to be confused, the style of rhetoric is to be confused, the common idea is to be confused, the understanding is to be confused.
