项目摘要

過去の研究では、感情的発話の理解において、日本人はアメリカ人よりも意味内容に加え、それがどのように発せられるか(語調情報)に注意を向けやすいことが示されてきた。このような文化差は、相互協調的自己観が優勢な日本人は相互独立的自己観が優勢なアメリカ人よりも関係性に関する手がかりを重視しやすいことと関連している。本研究ではこれまでこのような関係性情報に対する敏感さの程度が果たして「他者からの視線」による影響を受けるのかどうかを日米で検討してきた。そして昨年度ミシガン大学と北海道大学で行った実験では、アメリカ人においては関係性情報への注意が促進されるのに対し、北海道在住の日本人においては関係性情報への注意が抑制されるという結果を見出した。本年度は、フォローアップを目的に、本州の日本人を対象に同様の実験を行った。最近、自発的移住が相互独立的自己観の起源の1つであると考えられ、実際、その歴史をもつ北海道における人々は、相互独立的であることが示唆されている(Kitayama, Ishii, et al.,2006)。しかしその一方で、個人が相互独立性をどのように達成するかに関して、アメリカと北海道では差異があることも指摘されている。その指摘によれば、アメリカにおける相互独立性は、他者との関係を構築し、その中で自己表現をすることによって達成されるが、北海道における相互独立性は、他者との関係を断ち切ることによって達成されると考えられる。一方、相互協調的であるとされる本州の日本人の場合、他者との関係を維持していくことによってその協調性は達成されることから、「他者からの視線」が存在する場合、さらに関係性情報への注意は促進されるだろう。63名の京都大学の学部生に対して実験を行ったところ、結果はこの予測と一致した。現在、この実験結果を踏まえた論文を執筆中である。
