本研究は、6-8世紀の東アジアにおける仏教美術(中国の南北朝後期〜隋唐時代、韓国の統一新羅時代、日本の奈良時代の彫刻・絵画を主な対象とする)の図像・構成原理・機能等に関わる諸問題を、当時の仏教界の中核を担い、中・韓・日三国にまたがって展開した『華厳経』関係の教学、及び関連する宗教的実践に注目して、包括的な解明をめざすものである。本年度も当該テーマに関連する写真資料・文献資料の収集、及びその整理と体系化に努めるとともに、主要作品の図像解読を中心とする研究を進めた。最も重要な成果は前年度、米国サンフランシスコ・アジア美術館にて開催された「高麗美術展」の出陳作品(特に高麗仏画)調査の成果の一端を発表した論考(「不動院蔵 観音菩薩万五千仏図」、『国華』第1313号掲載)である。高麗仏画には東アジアにおける華厳美術の最も発達した形態がみられるが、本研究が対象とする6-8世紀の作品の図像解釈や制作背景の解明を行う上でもきわめて重要な情報を含んでおり、本論は短編ながらも、2年間の研究を踏まえた、報告者の華厳思想と美術・儀礼の相互関係に関する見解を集成したものとなった。なお前年度末に「東大寺二月堂本尊光背図像考-大仏蓮弁線刻図を参照して」と題する長編の論文を完成させ、奈良国立博物館研究紀要『鹿園雑集』第六号に発表したが、この成果の一部を応用して、12月に東大寺で開催された第三回ザ・グレート・ブッダ・シンポジウム「カミとほとけ」において、「中国仏教美術にみる神と仏」と題する研究発表を行った。また3月に中国に調査旅行に赴き、初期華厳経美術の代表的遺構である河南省・安陽地区の宝山霊泉寺及び小南海などの石窟寺院を中心とする遺跡を踏査し、帰国後資料の整理を行うとともに、現地調査の結果がこれまでに発表した研究成果の論旨を補強するものであることを再確認した。さらに2年間にわたる中国の華厳美術に関する研究成果の一部は、2月に国立国際美術館にて行った「中国国宝展」の記念講演(題目『中国の仏教彫刻』)の内容にも盛り込んだ。
