项目摘要

本研究は、更新世末から完新世初頭にかけての北海道東部における石器石材の入手・選択過程の復元を通じて、石材利用にかかわる人間集団の行動形態を解明することを目的として計画された。北海道東部において、堆積岩の分布・産状に関する調査を、単一の水系にとどまらず複数の地域においてはじめて網羅的に試みたこと、それによって得られた知見を実際の考古学資料の観察・分析に適用し、当該石器群のライフ・ヒストリー復元の基礎としたこと、が本研究の特色としてあげられる。本年度では第一に、十勝平野周辺域および常呂川・渚滑川・名寄川流域において、石器石材に関する分布調査を前年から引き続いて実施した。利用可能な堆積岩、とりわけ硬質頁岩、チャート、メノウ、砂岩などの岩体がどの地域に分布するのかを確認し、その産状を記載していった。その結果、北海道東部内のいくつかの地域では良質な硬質頁岩の岩体が分布していること、それらの硬質頁岩を用いた石器が十勝平野や釧路平野に所在する複数の諸遺跡から検出されていることを確認した。これまでの北海道では、石器石材の入手・選択過程に関する議論は、黒曜石を主な対象として進められてきたが、綿密な分布調査を前提とすることで、今後は堆積岩にもある程度拡張して進めていくことが可能性なことがわかった。第二に、北海道東部の完新世初頭に位置づけられる石器群の石材消費形態の検討を実施した。その結果によれば、地域単位できわめて特異な傾向を示すことが判明した。更新世末の段階では、石器群の石材消費形態は地域(流域)内で相互補完的な変異を示しているのに対して、完新世初頭になると大きな変化をとげていることがわかった。この成果は、北海道における縄文時代の成立過程を解明するうえでも重要な論点と思われ、今後多角的な検討が必要とされているといえよう。
