本研究では、オホーツク文化期における北海道東部と千島列島の技術交流について、棒状骨器の分布や属性を探ることで明らかにする目的で、以下の点の調査を実施した。本研究で扱う棒状骨器とはクジラ骨で作られたもので、中央付近に1～3カ所の突起を有し、両端が鋭く尖るものや使用により磨滅しているものを指す。1. 北海道東部と千島列島のオホーツク文化期資料は戦前に発掘された資料が多くあるので、それらの所在調査を行い内容把握の上、対象資料の実測、写真撮影を行った。特に北海道大学フィールド科学センター植物園・博物館の所蔵の弁天島貝塚遺跡(北海道根室市)出土資料には、当該研究対象の骨器が多く所蔵されているため、その図化を中心に行った。2. 棒状骨器は砕氷用具の可能性がこれまでの研究で指摘されていたため、骨器の機能を探るため、クジラ類の骨で作った棒状骨器で氷の破砕実験を行った。3. 用途推定にあたり民族例についても考慮する必要があることからイヌイットの砕氷用具や北極圏における骨器出土例についてUBC人類学博物館(カナダ・バンクーバー)、バンクーバー市立図書館(同)、マニトバ博物館(同・ウィニペグ)で資料調査や文献調査を行った。以上の調査の結果、この棒状骨器が南千島、根室地方のオホーツク文化期遺跡に限定的に見られることが確認された。先行研究で紹介された北千島出土とされる遺物に類似の棒状骨器が含まれることも考えると、定型的な骨器を使用した生業技術が北海道東部から千島列島で共有されていた可能性が指摘できた。今回の砕氷実験では、当該骨器の用途特定に至る成果は得られなかったが、実験の条件設定等、今後の検討課題が明らかになった。また、民族資料の中でアイスピックとして使われた骨器資料には、当該研究で扱った資料と類似の骨器があることも確認できたため、骨器の用途推定に向け研究の見通しをつけることができた。
