放射光と中性子を利用した装置・実験手法の開発・改良を行うことにより、遷移金属酸化物・希土類ホウ化物・スクッテルダイト化合物などの強相関電子系を対象として、その電荷・スピン・軌道自由度の秩序状態とその揺らぎを観測し、系が示す新奇物性発現機構の解明を行った。
