本研究の目的は、文化財の活用という観点から、寺社や史跡等で実施されている演劇やコンサート等の催事について、現況の把握と空間特性の分析により、これらの催事の意義を考察することである。昨年度は、歴史的空間で実施される催事について、日本全国での事例を広く情報収集した。対象は、寺社、史跡、建造物、名勝である。その結果、種類別、空間構成別、公演者や主催者別にそれぞれ傾向が認められ、いくつかのグループに分けて分析することが有効であることがわかった。本年度は、それぞれのグループから代表的な事例を選び調査し、文化財の活用としての意義や劇場としての空間の特性を考察した。調査対象は、史跡で実施する市民による野外劇の事例として函館市五稜郭、史跡で実施する伝統芸能の事例として大阪城や姫路城の薪能、寺社で実施する大規模なコンサートの事例として京都と奈良の寺院、文化財指定された伝統的芝居小屋の現代的な活用の事例として山鹿市八千代座などである。これら催事は、その場所の歴史や文化財としての価値の理解に役立っているものと考えられ、史跡の活用や地域の活性化にも結び付けられている。実際に、歴史に関わる演目や伝統芸能、伝統楽器などの催事をおこなっている事例が多い。一方、主催する側からは、歴史的な雰囲気や文化的なイメージと並んで、地形や空間構成に着目しその場所を開催地として選んでいる傾向があることがわかった。例えば、五稜郭跡の野外劇では濠が舞台の一部に効果的に用いられ、大宰府跡や平城宮跡の野外コンサートなどでは囲繞感や正面性が意識されている。また、遺跡を背景として活かす形が、大坂城跡や姫路城跡での薪能などにみられた。
