近代日本において、当時の農村・農民が、一般の人々、とくに都市に住む人々にどのようなイメージをもたれていたのか、すなわち、田園空間の再認識について分析した。その結果明らかになったことは以下のようである。1920年代以前では、農村が新聞などのメディアに取り上げられることも少なく、都市住民は農村・農民に対するイメージを持ちにくかつた。その一方で、1890〜1900年代初めにかけて、近代文学・西洋絵画の一部では、農村や農民が題材・対象として頻繁に取り上げられていた。牧歌的な田園を描いていた西洋の近代文学・西洋絵画を学んだ一部の知識人は、小作地が増加し農民の没落が進行している当時の農村・農民の生活実態を描こうとはせず、農村を牧歌的な田園風景として描いたのだった。だが、1920年代になると、小作争議が新聞に多く取り上げられるようになり、農村社会問題として都市に住む人々にも強い印象を与えていった。また、文学においても小説『土』が再評価され、小作人の貧困、小作争議を描いた農民文学が登場してくるなど、この時期の農民文学が当時の社会経済状況に強く規定されるようになった。さらに、1930年代になると、農村の貧困問題と東北の凶作がそれまでにない規模で新聞に取り上げられた。農村の状況は、ルポルタージュ風の新聞報道や写真報道に加えて、新聞の発行部数の増加や募金活動、「救農」議会の開会などをも通じて伝わっていき、都市に住む幅広い層に「農村=貧困」というイメージが形成された。この「農村=貧困」というイメージは、左右両陣営でも共有され、各々の自説の主張・行動の根拠ともなった。
