项目摘要

今年度は国内に活動の基盤を移し、前年度にフランスで収集した資料の整理、読解に務めた。具体的な成果としては、まず国立古文書館で収集した1740-89年度間のパリ王立科学アカデミーと宮内大臣の間の通信書簡[Serie 01(宮内大臣文書)]の整理があげられる。これにより、18世紀後半を通じて科学アカデミーと政府との交流の質が変化していく様子を国内外で初めて定量的な手段で確認することが出来た。また、科学アカデミー古文書館、保健衛生古文書館、土木学校図書館で収集した科学アカデミーと関わりのある公共事業の事例資料を解読し、国内外での学術調査の際に、図書館で関連する二次文献の収集に務めた。そして一次資料と二次資料の総合的な読み合わせを進めることにより、科学アカデミーが国家から各種の公共事業審査や委託研究を請け負っていく経緯について、当時の社会的要因、科学史的要因の双方と関連づけつつ再構成することができた。同時に、国立古文書館で収集したパリ市当局文書を中心に、科学アカデミーが関わらなかった各種公共事業(主に河川整備事業)との比較も行った。上記のような一次資料に基づく綿密な分析を行う一方、マクロな視点から十八世紀の科学・技術と公共事業を捉える試みも行った。科学アカデミーの学者集団が科学を媒介に国家との連携を強めていく経緯は、19世紀の西洋世界で本格化する「科学の専門職業化」の重要な一段階を成していると捉えることが出来る。更にジェンダー科学史的視点から分析すれば、その現象は、制度化された科学・技術研究機関に所属する男性学者の社会的地位が上昇する一方で、それまで職能ギルドで技術的知識を担っていた女性職人層や、社交界で科学サロンを主催していた貴族女性層が科学・技術から遠ざけられていく過程としても理解することが出来るのである。
