本研究は、僧侶普寂の思想を通して、日本近世思想史上における仏教思想の内実と展開を追い、近世から近代にかけての思想的水脈の一つを示した。3年間の研究成果は、単著『近世仏教思想の独創-僧侶普寂の思想と実践』(トランスビュー社)として、本年(平成20年)5月に出版された。初年度は、受入教授である末木文美士教授の指導により、近世思想史における大乗非仏説論への応えである、普寂の華厳思想を解明した。初年度後半から第2年度前半には、プリンストン大学宗教研究センターに一年間留学して、宇宙像をめぐる近世護法論の発表を行うことにより、日本国内では得難い、時代と地域にまたがる広い思想史的知見を得た。第2年度後半から第3年度前半には、近世的宗派意識の分析という視点から、普寂の伝記と近世浄土教団の戒律観を明らかにした。同時に末木教授の指導によって、丸山眞男に始まる日本近世思想史が政治思想史のみで推移してきたことを批判し、宗教思想史を組み込んだ全体的な思想史像を提言した。第3年度後半からは、博士論文と任期3年間に発表した論文原稿をもとにして、それらに大幅な加筆と修正を加える出版作業を行った。3年間で学問的視野が広がり、従来の日本一国政治思想史に対して、東アジア全域を視野に入れた宗教思想史を対象化するに至った。従来の日本思想史の空隙であった、仏教を中心とする宗教思想を思想史に組み込む研究の視点を得た。
