本研究の目的は,人間が対象理解に関わる知識を抽出・利用する仕組みについて,他者との関わりを考慮した認知モデルを提案することである.従来の研究では,認知科学の記号計算論で論じられる認知の個人性と,状況論や文化心理学での議論に代表される認知の社会性があることが論じられている.この2つの特徴を接続するため,本研究では,情報検索の概念を導入した.Webサイト検索時に利用される情報と,人間が認知対象の理解時に利用する知識について,「多くの人の支持を得た知識ほど,妥当な知識であるとして利用されやすい」という共通項を発見し,他者の心的状態を自分の心的状態に反映しながら信念を構築する,認知原理の存在を主張した.この原理に基づき,他者が支持する頻度によって,対象理解時の信念の妥当性が決定されるという仕組みを持つ,社会的支持信念モデル(Socially Supported Belief Model)を提案した.モデルの適用として,他者がかかわる心的現象である,発話意図の推定と,集団内での感情伝播を取り上げた.個人内で選択される信念の恣意性という性質と共に,会話参与者間の信念の流通性という性質を併せ持つ発話意図の計算は,社会的に支持された信念を適用することで可能であるとし,記号計算アプローチによって一連の知識の構造と振る舞いを記述することで,新たな意図認知のメカニズムを提示した。一方,発話型人形に対する成人の愛着感情の変動という心的現象取り上げ,ファンレターのテキスト分析をおこない,成人の愛着感情の認知特性,および,移行対象の特性を明らかにした.発見された現象の中で,他者との交流によって,既に発生している愛着感情が強まるという現象に注目し,社会的支持信念の認知原理の妥当性を経験的に検証した.結論として,認知主体が属する集団の他者が支持する頻度によって,認知対象を理解する際に利用される信念の妥当的順位が決定されるという特徴があることを示した.
