元禄期までに刊行された字書諸本のほぼ全て確認することができ、下記のような成果を得た。(1)『大広益会玉篇』の組織を襲いつつ『古今韻会』検索の便をなす『五音図』は、その部首目録に画数順の配列を採用した字書であるが、寛永5年以降に4度もの開板が確認された。このことによって、慶安期以降の『字彙』の影響下になる画引字書の編纂より早く、玉篇系統の字書において画引形式が試行され、広く受け入れられていたことが明らかになった。(2)意義分類的な部首配列の解体を避ける意識が働いたためか、近世前期の542部首の玉篇系統の字書においては、字書本文中の部首配列を画数順にするものが刊行されなかった。(3)文書用語に使用される字訓については、概して玉篇系統の字書の網羅率が高いが、元禄後半頃より字彙系統の字書の網羅率が上昇する。これは、『増続大広益会玉篇大全』の影響と見られる。(4)『四書字引』や『錦繍段字引』等の、特定のテキストの学習に用いる字書は、元禄年間だけでも9種類が存する。それらは、画数算定の基準などからいずれも『字彙』の系統に含まれるものである。また、特定の註によることを明示するのは元禄9年の『四書集註字引』以降のことであり、羅山点・山崎点などの区別に配慮を示す字引類が現れるようになるのは享保期以降のことである。上記(1)〜(3)の成果をもとに、第9回表記研究会(平成18年5月13日、於東京学芸大学)において「近世前期の画引字書をめぐって-諸本とその分類-」と題して研究発表を行い、(1)(2)の成果をもとに、「近世初期刊行の画引字書について」と題する論文を執筆した(『国語文字史の研究』10、和泉書院、平成19年中に刊行予定)
