项目摘要

The purpose of this study is to investigate the regional differences of demographic behavior among people in early modern Japan, by creating a large scale database of historical population registers. Several scholars had already tried to make such a database before ; however these existing systems were not commonly utilized because of a lack of general versatility and a demand of specialized skill. In this project, we introduced PstgreSQL to utilize the population registers data stored in our server machine. Since this database software can be downloaded at any time and at no extra charge, our database system is expected to become a common basis for the future study of Japanese historical demography. In order to utilize our system, we continued to enter new population registers information to our database. These data include Ario-shinden village and Nakasu village in Nobi region, Arai village in Tohoku region, and the city of Takasago in Kinai region. The population registers of Okeya-machi, one of the neighborhoods in Nagasaki city were also transcribed to the coding sheet.Since we have already created huge dataset of Japanese historical demography including the materials gathered before this project, some kind of storage facility was highly required. Reitaku University kindly offered a place for the data archive in its library during the process of this project. The study of Japanese historical demography is expected to develop further by utilizing this new facility as a common research base.
