11年以下の多様な周期で変化する太陽活動が地球大気に与える影響について、観測データの解析と、太陽放射過程と化学反応を組み込んだ大気大循環モデルの開発、それによる数値実験を通して調べた。地表付近から高度約500km に及ぶ大気が、下層の対流圏、中層の成層圏、中間圏、高層の熱圏、電離圏といったそれぞれの領域ごとに、特有の特徴を持つ応答を示すことが明らかとなった。
