GeneralBackgrotmd:The welfare system in Norway is categorized as a variant of the social democratic, Nordic welfare-state. The public sector plays a bigger role in all of the Nordic countries as a provider of the social welfare than in most other industrialized nations, even though there are differences among them. As different as the approaches which the respective countries have employed, Norway and Japan share similar problems in meeting the demands of an ageing society. Japan and Norway seem to share certain important features that are bound to influence the institution of social policy; among them are the relatively significant role of informal care provided by the family, problems posed by the existence of small, the increasing significance of NPO.The Aim of the Project:Our objective was to bring to light some of the features in the care of the elderly in Japan and Norway from a comparative perspective with emphasis on the system of provision of care related to the elderly, and t … More he role of informal care provided by the family.The Plan and method:The project consisted of 3 parts:1) The study of Norway and Japan as welfare state/society with emphasis on the care of the elderly on a macro-level from a comparative perspective (Norio Okazawa and Junichi Hisatsuka)2) The Analysis of the system of provision of care related to the elderly (Karen Christensen, Unni Edvardsen and Yayoi Saito)3) The care of the elderly and the "family"/gender (Kari Waerness and Reiko Abe Auestad)We worked together with Norwegian researchers for visiting research of elderly care, and research meeting in Tokyo, Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim.Result of the Research:Project members wrote final papers. As the result of our research, we found some similarities and differences between both systems. For example, when we see home help services development of both countries, we can find same experience. Recently both systems are influenced by globalization and competition, and care service provision has changed so much. We plan to publish our paper as a book. Less
