My research this year achieved the first big step of organizing the corpus study of Japanese ancient military system. I researched the Japanese ancient military system history from two different approaches over the last two years.As my first approach, I had researched how Ritsuryo Military System of the 8th century was. I understood that this system was actually a massive conscripted military, which was formed for the purpose of forcing Silla to become the tributary to Japan I elucidated this army's structure, the process of its forming, the progress of its development and the passage into disorganization. With the result of this research, I finished the several treatises which have been published.Unfortunately, there were two problems found; first, the part about its development was only a schematic. The whole figure should have been described more completely. Secondly, there was a controvertible issue; I suggested the mental training of the military at that time was concerned with an … More cient nationalism and this issue needed more research.This year, I studied these two issues more deeply and achieved good results which are going into the treatise. I have also prepared a treatise on demonstrating the duty of soldiering. It contradicts the critical opinion of my research on Ritsuryo military system. I have included this in my research report to you.In my second approach, I worked on the Otyo-Kokka military system in the 10th-12th centuries. I highlighted “Tsuibo-kanpu", which is the arrest warrant of that time and is what was used to invoke military power. I used this word as the key to answering several questions; how the national military was constructed; how it was formed; how it was developed. To investigate these subjects, I correlated them to the process of the forming of the Bushi class. I have already published almost 10 papers in this field, and the whole frame them appeared in my book “Budhi no seicho to Insei"(Kodansha/Nihon no rekishi 07, 2001).This year, I reconsidered and highly developed my opinion about Ocho Kokka military system. As a result, I now have a clearer view of how the national military system during the Insei period was, and how it developed into the Shugo system in the Kamakur period. As part of my process of re-examination, I collected more records of Tsuibo-kanpu and sorted them out. This result of my research is included in my report to you.As the result of my entire research of this time, I am happy to announce that I was able to accomplish to clear up both the Ritsuryo Military system and the Ocho Kokka military system. With this achievement, I am publishing two books, “The Study on the History of Japanese Ritsuryo Military System", and “The Study on the History of Japanese Otyo-Kokka Military System". Less
