干潟に生息するチゴガニが示す社会行動のwaving displayとバリケード構築行動に地理的な変異が存在するか、また存在する場合、その地域間の差異をつくる要因は何かを検討した。また各地域集団間の遺伝的類縁関係を、ミトコンドリアDNAを指標に解析した。Wavingの様式とバリケード構築行動頻度はともに、南方の集団が、他の集団とは違った特徴を示した。この2つの社会行動の地理的変異は、それぞれの地域集団のもつ固有の行動特性によるものであることが野外実験から示された。遺伝的特徴においても、南方の集団が他の集団からかけ離れた特徴を示すことが明らかとなった。
