今年度(平成十九年度)では、六朝玄学において盛んに論争された、いわば「言不尽意」論につき、とりわけ王弼の「言-象-意」の論理階梯における「象」の意味と機能について考察を行った。王弼は著述『周易略例』のなかで、「意を尽くすは象に若く莫く、象を尽くすは言に若く莫し」(「明象」)といい、「言」より「意」の獲得の論理階梯(言→象→意)として「象」の介入を認めている。ここの「象」とはほかならぬ『易』の卦象と解釈することができるが、そもそも「象」または「卦象」とは、認識論においてどのような意味をもち、機能しているものなのか、という問題がある。そこで、易伝が成立するに至るまでの、先秦から前漢における関連資料を調査し、「象」の宗教的(呪術的)、または哲学的意味について考察を行った。考察の結果、「象」は神霊の働きをもたらすために用いる模型(たとえば雨乞いの土龍など)の呪術的機能に近く、易の「卦」も、自然万物の法則性を象った一種の「模型」的性質をもっており、「象」の本来的意味はこうした呪術的意味から展開したものであることを明らかにした。さらに「象」は戦国末頃になると、とりわけ道家系思想の存在論的変化(「道」の形而下化)につれ、根源者を認識・把握する媒介(兆象)として用いられることになる、ということも併せて指摘した。これらの考察内容については、論文として執筆した(下記の研究発表参照)。
