Malignant tumors repeat cell division and also proliferation actively even in bad environment. Consequently, it is thought that the glycolytic pathway largely contributes to getting energy for cell proliferation. In other words, anaerobic glucose metabolism is greatly facilitated not in normal tissue but in malignant tumor. Examination with positron emission computed tomography (PEI) using 18F-fluorodeoxygluoose (FDG) is to apply this phenomenon. Even though differential diagnosis which the tumor is benign or malignant and definition of invasive area are difficult, FDG-PET makes qualitative diagnosis possible by imaging study. On the other hand, FDG-PET enable quantitative evaluation of tumor glucose metabolism Detection rate by FDG-PET is extremely low in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), although it in malignant tumor is high even in metastatic liver tumor. FDG-PET is indicator of anaerobic glucose metabolism and negative image of FDG-PET indicate to aerobic metabolism. Namely, it is expected that there is inverse correlation between blood flow in the cancer and anaerobic glucose metabolic rate (detection rate of FDG-PEI).The purpose of this research is to clarify the reason of low detection rate of HCC in FDG-PET.The relationship between the blood supply and anaerobic glucose metabolism of the tumor seem to be universal exceeding the kind of neoplasm. As results, anaerobic glucose metabolism related to blood flow and oxygen consumption in HCC, and also it related to oxygen consumption rate in other malignant tumors.
